Research is being undertaken into the roles of volunteers in the archives sector, to help inform the development of the Volunteering in Archives Action Plan.
Volunteering in Archives Action Plan
The National Archives is a partner in delivering the Volunteering in Archives Action Plan. This initiative, led by the Archives & Records Association (ARA), has developed a range of approaches to supporting volunteering in the archives sector including the ARA Volunteering Award, the Volunteer Co-ordinators Network and training in volunteer management (recently incorporated into ARA’s core training offer).
Underpinning research into volunteering in archives
In order to underpin the development of guidance, training and support in this area, a key objective of the action plan is to gather evidence of how volunteers are being used within archives and to identify good practice. To this end, the ARA has recently commissioned Caroline Williams to carry out further research into the roles that volunteers are undertaking within the archives sector. This research will be published later in the year and will inform the future development of the Volunteering in Archives Action Plan.
As part of this research project, archive services will be contacted and asked to complete a short survey regarding their use of volunteers. We would strongly encourage those contacted to support this piece of evidence gathering by completing the survey.
