Seeing bands on parade it might be assumed that the military musician's life is far removed from the dangers of the battlefield. This talk is intended to dispel that illusion, with stories of awards to bandsmen and former bandsmen during the World Wars ranging from the Victoria Cross to the Military Medal (with some added surprises thrown in).

Stephen Mason is a committee member of the UK (Founder) branch of the International Military Music Society and has been researching the combat service of British bandsmen for a number of years. This talk brings together some of the stories revealed by this research.
