Changes in series references for digital records

23 June 2008

The National Archives has developed systems to enable the transfer of digital records from government departments and provide online access to them over the Internet.

Facts you need to know:

In general, document-level information about digital records has been removed from The National Archives Catalogue and migrated to a new catalogue for digital records, available via Electronic Records Online (ERO).

We have changed the references for 18 series of digital records (for example, CAB 172 becomes CAB 202). The changes are listed below.

Unfortunately, any bookmarks you have set for records in these series will no longer work. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

However, The National Archives Catalogue still holds information for two types of digital records:

datasets held in the National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD)

websites hosted externally (for example by the European Web Archive)

In these cases, The National Archives Catalogue contains an entry linked to NDAD or to the relevant external website.

Special cases

BT 395 (the database of World War II Medals issued to Merchant Seamen available from DocumentsOnline) has not been migrated to the new system. Its series reference remains BT 395.
We have created a new and distinct series BT 399 for the original accession that was stored in the old Digital Archive. This archival copy is not publishable online.

Similarly, PREM 18 (Snapshot of No 10 Downing Street website) remains in the Catalogue with a link to the European Archive website that hosts it.
We have created a new and distinct series PREM 21 for the original accession that was stored in the old Digital Archive. This archival copy is not publishable online.

JA 10 (The Shipman Inquiry) and PN 1 (The BSE Inquiry) are no longer catalogued in Electronic Records Online as they are not hosted by The National Archives. There are links to these websites from the Catalogue.

PRO 12 (PRO Conservation Database) is no longer catalogued in Electronic Records Online but is now available from the National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD). There are links to datasets from the Catalogue.
