This document is a declaration in support
of an application for letters of marque. The
declaration specifies details of the ship,
its armaments, crew and its officers. The letters of marque authorised
the commander of a private vessel to attack enemy merchant vessels
and seize goods in time of war. The captain signed a declaration
and, with two sureties, executed a bail or recognisance that
the terms of the commission would be observed and that the Lord
High Admiral's dues and proper customs duties would be paid on
the prizes (goods) taken.
Please note:
- The document is written in a mixed cursive
hand with secretary forms of 'e' and 'r'.
