Photograph of the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (Catalogue reference: COPY 1/451)

This is a guide to help you with your research. The National Archives holds many official records and papers of people who have held political office in England and Wales, but not usually their private papers.

  • What do I need to know before I start?

    • Try to find out:

      • the name at birth of the person and any names or titles by which they may subsequently have been known
      • their date of birth and/or death
      • their occupation and any institutions or organisations they might have been involved with

Did you know?

The papers of famous people other than those who have held political office are most likely to be found in the archives of the professions or organisations they were involved with, among personal papers belonging to their families, or in other archives.

Records generated by a particular person in their official capacity might not be listed under their name in our cataloguea search tool with descriptions of 11 million documents from the UK central government, law courts, and other national bodies. Try searching by subject instead.

If the person you are interested in is very well-known there may be records in several different archives.
