HRH The Duke of Windsor: Telegrams
Document reference: CAB 127/156
A copy of the telegram sent by the Governor-General of New Zealand on 2 December 1936 to deliver the reaction of Michael Savage, the Prime Minister, to Baldwin's request for advice on 28 November. It states that the majority of the people of New Zealand would accept the proposal for a morganatic marriage and refers to the King's widespread popularity. Savage agreed shortly afterwards to support the British government's position that a morganatic marriage was not acceptable.
