This Middlesex roll contains an assessment for the Hearth Tax. It contains no dates, headings or references to a particular collection, but was presumably produced before the first revising act of July 1663 which required all assessments to contain lists of chargeable and non-chargeable hearths. Although all of the rotulets in this roll were produced by the same scribe each hundred (or each parish in Ossulstone hundred) has its own internal numbering system and distinctive stitching marks at the head. For ease of referencing and to reflect the original composition of the document it has been divided into 26 parts according to the contemporary numbering:
Part 21 is an assessment for St. Botolph without Aldgate parish, Ossulstone hundred. It consists of thirteen rotulets with contemporary numbers 1-5, 7-9, 11 and 13 at the foot and modern numbers 1-13 on the dorse. The final rotulet does not include the signatures of the collectors, which is usual in the other parts that form this piece, therefore it is likely that this part is incomplete.
The present piece E 179/143/407 consists of a number of rotulets that were brought together from several other documents in September 2002. From the original piece numbers: E 179/143/407: rotulets 2-5 transferred E 179/402/1, one hundred and seventy nine rotulets remain within E 179/143/407.
