This roll contains the particulars of account of the prior of Carmarthen, collector of the clerical poll tax granted to Edward III by the clergy of the province of Canterbury in 1377, for the archdeaconry of Carmarthen.
The roll is in good condition and is legible.
The roll is undated, but it probably represents a fair copy of the original assessment submitted to the Exchequer during the accounting process, probably around the time that payment of the tax was due to have been made, on 24 June 1377.
The document begins with a recital of the explicit details of the grant (m 1), and then lists the names of religious and clergy taxed in the various deaneries of the archdeaconry of Carmarthen, with the amounts they are to pay (m 2). In the deanery of Carmarthen, these are: the abbot, 6 monks and 2 clerks of Whitland, the prior, 5 canons and 4 clerks of Carmarthen, the prior and vicar of St Clears, the vicar of Llanstephan, the vicar and 4 chaplains of Laugharne, and other rectors and vicars in that deanery. In the deanery of Gower, the list comprises various rectors and vicars, including the rector, vicar and 3 chaplains of Swansea, and the prior of Llangennith/Llangynydd. In the deanery of Llandeilo, here named Llandeilo Fawr ('Llandeilo Waur'), the list of those taxed opens with the abbot and 5 canons of Talley, and includes the vicar and 4 chaplains of Llanybydder. In the deanery of Llangadog, the list includes the rector, vicar and chaplain of Llanarthney, and in the deanery of Kidwelly, those taxed include the prior and vicar of Kidwelly, and the vicar and chaplain of Pembrey.
Although the particulars list individuals, the entries have been indexed under the relevant institution, that is, abbey, priory, rectory, vicarage, etc., for convenience, but chaplains have not been noticed.
