This document is an extract from an Exchequer roll of the Treasury of Receipt showing the first payment to John Blanke, dated 7 December 1507.

(Catalogue reference: E 36/214 folio 109)

'John Blanke, the blacke trumpeter' is recorded on several occasions in the accounts of the Treasurer of the Chamber records. John Blanke was a black trumpeter, who played regularly at the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Please note:

  • The document is written in a cursive secretary hand.
  • The first two words in line 7, should be transcribed as S[u]m[ma] p[ar]t[ium]
  • Transcribe the first two words in line 8 as S[u]m[ma] to[ta]lis
