Talk to an archive service or archivist
To find whether your university or college has an archive service or records manager, or find the contact details for your local records office you can use the Find An Archive service on The National Archives website.

JISC Records Management guidance
JISC has produced guidelines for Higher Education Institutions on the retention of records and information. This will give you accurate advice on how long to keep different types of records.

Records Management in Charities Toolkit
A useful set of guidance on records management for charities developed by the British Academy Research Project ‘Archiving the Mixed Economy of Welfare in Britain’, in partnership with Charity Finance Group.

Cataloguing Archive Collections
The National Archives has produced a useful guide to cataloguing archive collections which provides introductory explanations and examples.

Digital Preservation Coalition
This organisation works to support those involved in digital preservation and provides support and guidance in how to do this, for example with its Digital Preservation Handbook.

Archiving websites
The UK Web Archive at the British Library collects and preserves websites from the UK. You can search to see if your students’ union website is already collected. If not, you can recommend a website is added. The Internet Archive offers a similar service with a global scope.
