Purpose of the survey
The purpose of the UK Annual Archive Sector Survey 2025 is to gather evidence to help demonstrate the social and economic importance of archives to funders and stakeholders – locally, regionally, and nationally – and to provide archive services with data to enable them to benchmark their performance.
What’s in it for archives?
- Advocacy – evidence to make the case for your social and economic value in order to sustain investment
- Performance benchmarking – consistent data to compare your archives’ operational context
- Informing strategy – knowing your operational context will support your business planning
- Fundraising – the data can be used as evidence to support funding applications or to express your value with the public
Guidance
We have guidance in both English and Welsh to provide added clarity on the terminology used within the survey questions. We recommend having this guidance open when responding to the survey, as it may help with answering questions.
For the finance section of the survey, please report on your organisation’s most recent complete financial year. (For example, January 2024 to December 2024 if your archive uses the calendar year, or April 2023 to March 2024 if you followed the 23-24 financial year).

Please note, each archive service only needs to submit one response, even if they operate from multiple sites. There are English and Welsh language versions of the survey that you can complete, depending on your preference.
