Bury Archives & Bury Art Museum produced a exhibition that highlighted the visual history of the surroundings of Silver Street in Bury. As place plays a vital part of personal identity, their aim was to reconnect people with the town centre, celebrating urban heritage and the robust history of Bury through their exhibition, Spirit of a Place.

Manchester Archives and Local Studies

Archives+ collaborated with Withington Walls and the University of Manchester to remove thousands of tributes left on AkseP19’s Marcus Rashford mural in Withington after it was defaced following the Euros in 2021. The items are currently stored at Manchester Central Library while a long-term preservation plan is developed with partners and the local community.

Tyne and Wear Archives

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums partnered with Fenwick Ltd to commemorate the company’s 140th anniversary at their Newcastle store with an exhibition that displayed the company’s history and ties to the circus and fairground. The exhibition also featured a fashion project by Northumbria University students who worked directly with archive material to create modern fashions inspired by the company’s rich heritage.

University of Leeds Special Collections and Galleries

The University of Leeds Special Collections and Galleries hosted a student internship to focus on LGBTQ+ representation in the University Archive collection. This led to a programme of enhancing records through subject tagging, contemporary collecting and the development of a guide to LGBTQ+ content in their collections.

University of Sheffield

A craft activity session celebrating Chinese New Year

The National Fairground and Circus Archive held an exhibition at the University of Sheffield to celebrate the conservation of the Orton and Spooner collection. The aim of this project was to preserve and open access to over 700 fairground ride plans and designs. They used this opportunity to expand their community outreach work through a number of engaging activities such as arts and crafts workshops with the Confucius Institute to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Archives: Wigan & Leigh won the National Volunteering Award 2022 for its impressive volunteering programme. They made their offer volunteer-centred, offering virtual opportunities, increasing community engagement and helping volunteers into paid employment. Volunteers also benefitted from Wigan Council’s new state-of-the-art archive facilities, which opened in June 2021.
