Detailed report on a file format

This report displays a detailed report for a file format. The report is split into eight sections: Summary, Documentation, Signatures, Compression, Character encoding, Rights, Reference files, and Properties.

Example detailed report for a file format.

Summary

This section includes general information about a file format. The "Developed By", "Supported By" and "Source" fields are links to detailed vendor reports on those people or organisations. The "Related file formats" section includes links to the detailed reports for file formats related to the current file format.

Documentation

This section lists the documents related to a file format. The "Author" and "Publisher" fields are links to detailed vendor reports and the "Identifier(s)" field may include a link to an external website. Any IPR for the document is listed under its type and date.
Each document is listed under its bibliographical text.

Signatures

This section details the internal and external signatures used to identify the file format. Internal signatures model the signatures contained within the bit stream of a digital object. Each signature consists of a set of byte sequences, which are displayed as a Pronom-specific regular expression. External signatures model the signatures which are external to the bit stream of a digital object. For example, the file extension.

Compression types

This section outlines the compression algorithms employed by the file format. The "Developed By" and "Supported By" fields are links to detailed vendor reports on those people or organisations. The "Identifier(s)" field may include a link to an external website. Documentation for a compression type is referenced by its bibliographic text, and any IPR by its type and date.
Each compression type is listed under its name and version.

Character encoding schemes

This section details the character encoding schemes employed by the file format, for example Unicode. The "Developed By" and "Supported By" fields are links to detailed vendor reports on those people or organisations. The "Identifier(s)" field may include a link to an external website. Documentation for a character encoding scheme is referenced by its bibliographic text, and any IPR by its type and date.
Each character encoding is listed under its name and version.

Rights

This section gives details on the intellectual property rights (IPR) for the file format. The "Owner(s)" field contains one or more links to detailed vendor reports and the "Identifier(s)" field may include a link to an external website.
Each IPR entry is listed under its type and date.

Reference Files

This section lists the reference files which may exist for the file format. The "Identifier(s)" field may include a link to an external website. Documentation for a reference file is referenced by its bibliographic text, and any IPR by its type and date. Also see the documentation section.
Each reference file is listed under its name.

Properties

This section lists the properties of a format that are significant to its long-term preservation. Properties are categorised as either inherent or instance. Inherent properties are derived from the underlying characteristics of a format. These properties are the same for all objects with the same format. Instance properties are properties that will vary between objects of the same format. Instance properties must be preserved in order to maintain the authenticity of the object
